On March 12, 2009, the Western Council of Construction Consumers (WCCC), the local chapter of the Construction Users Round Table (CURT), held its thirteenth annual Distinguished Project Awards Banquet. Awards were handed out in three categories: Distinguished Project (WCCC’s highest award), followed by Exceptional Project and Outstanding Project. Three projects for which Willdan provided project and/or construction management services were presented awards.
In addition, WCCC presented its Associate Member of the Year Award to Tom Broz, Senior VP and Director of Program and Construction Management Services in Willdan's Anaheim office, for his efforts on behalf of the organization in 2008.
City of Pinole, Prune Street Pedestrian Bridge Replacement: WCCC Distinguished Project
The Prune Street pedestrian bridge, constructed in the 1960’s to connect the residential area adjacent to Pinole Valley Road to the downtown commercial district, was declared structurally unsound and closed in 2004. The City asked Willdan to design and provide project management for a replacement bridge which would not only be functional much longer than the original bridge but would also be much more aesthetically pleasing. Because of its location, the bridge required the approval of multiple regulatory agencies. Additionally, the City had a limited budget for this project, and when it was eventually put out to bid, it was bid during the height of the recent construction price increases. Despite the regulatory and economic hurdles the bridge was completed to the ultimate satisfaction of the City and the surrounding community.
City of Fountain, Valley Recreation Center Expansion: WCCC Exceptional Project
Willdan provided complete project management, redesign, and construction management services for this recreation center expansion project. The City had acquired a 23-acre parcel adjacent to the existing 55-acre recreation center complex, and hired a design team for the expansion. When that design was completed and put out to bid, the bids came in significantly higher than the City’s budget. The City approached Willdan to take over the project and modify the design, utilizing as much as possible the original design drawings. Willdan was able to modify the design retaining all the features the City desired but getting the construction cost within budget. Willdan was then asked to manage the construction, which it did completing the project within budget and on schedule.
City of Rosemead, Garvey Avenue Bridge Reconstruction: WCCC Outstanding Project
Willdan provided complete project management, design, and construction management services for this replacement bridge. The existing bridge created a traffic impediment to Garvey Avenue being only 56% as wide as the approach roadways. In replacing this bridge the goal was to not only provide a wider, safer bridge but also to provide a bridge that retained the character of the existing bridge and accommodate improvements to the Rio Hondo Channel which it crossed. The completed bridge achieved these goals.
