The Marshak Science Building is part of the City College of New York campus on the upper west side
of Manhattan. The building is a mid-rise, 750,000 square foot science building, which includes
research and teaching labs, office areas, a library, an auditorium, and a gymnasium with a pool. To
address indoor air quality issues caused by aging infrastructure, Willdan is implementing a
multi-phase project that includes the study, design, and construction management for the renovation
                    of the facilities.
Two of the three project phases are nearly complete, including the installation of a new building
management system, retrofits of flow fume hoods, and new make-up air systems for the building’s
laboratories. This project has already resulted in avoided costs of $55.4 million to replace failing
systems, and an annual energy savings of over 1,325,000 kWh. Additionally, the measures addressed
building air quality and environmental control issues that had plagued the facility and led to
violations and lawsuits against the college.
