Course Description

The Improvised Explosive Device (IED) Awareness Course is designed to provide first responders and security personnel the skills necessary to assess the IED threat during emergency responses.  Upon course completion, the participant should have the ability to determine the IED threat associated with the response, determine the protective and mitigation actions needed to protect the response team and populace, and conduct systematic searches of the site.  The IED Electronics portion of the course provides hands-on instruction in component recognition, IED circuit building, and trigger types used in IEDs.  The Explosive module provides instruction on military, commercial, and homemade effects and safety precautions.  The course culminates practical application search scenarios.

Performance Objectives

  • Identify the types of IEDs commonly used by terrorists and discuss the current IED threat
  • Determine hazards posed by commercial/military/homemade energetic materials and employ appropriate safety measures to mitigate risks
  • Conduct an accurate threat assessment, determine potential risks to the responding team, and select appropriate protective measures to mitigate risks
  • Recognize the effects of blast injury to the body and take protective measures to reduce the risk of blast
  • Recognize common components used in IEDs and relate IED triggers to the threat assessment process
  • Initiate a systematic search and take appropriate mitigation actions to minimize risks
