Course Description

This 16-hour course provides training and resources for personnel who may be tasked with serving as a Public Information Officer (PIO) or otherwise interacting with the media. The participant will learn the basics of understanding and working effectively and positively with the news media. Participants will understand the laws relating to media access and release of information, learn to effectively communicate messages in a natural and effective manner, learn to control the image of the organization in a positive light, learn to effectively deal with crisis communications & management, learn to realistically convey information in accordance with the ICS/ NIMS/SEMS guidelines.

Performance Objectives

  • Describe various ways in which the media and public information officers may be perceived
  • Identify the basic types of media organizations and their characteristics
  • Describe the role of a PIO
  • Identify who the PIO represents
  • Identify who the PIO speaks for
  • Describe the ABC’s for the PIO
  • Describe media policies of an organization
  • Describe how to develop media relationships
  • Describe the various legal issues and laws related to the media, including laws related to public, private and school property and HIPPA medical privacy laws
  • Identify and describe the difference between the concepts of crisis and emergency communications
  • Demonstrate methodologies for communicating with the media in high profile events
  • Describe the effective methodology for conducting interviews in various forms of media (i.e. print, television, radio, etc.)
  • Conduct an effective press conference
  • Identify and utilize the various tools available through ICS, SEMS, NIMS, and other systems for managing media operations
