Course Description

The Bomb Squad / SWAT Interoperability Course is of a total of 10 days duration. The course is broken down into two courses of 5 days duration that can be taken separately or back to back. Part 2 of the training is designed to provide the bomb technician with the basic skill sets required to perform operate in support of a SWAT team. The course covers the philosophy, tools and techniques required to support a SWAT commander in incident planning and execution of all phases. In addition to these skills practical exercises are also conducted to reinforce the skills and knowledge learnt during part 1.  For a SWAT/Bomb Squad to be fully integrated it is essential that each discipline understand the capabilities, limitations and procedures followed by each. To ensure that this is accomplished SWAT commanders and team leaders from surrounding jurisdictions who may require support from the bomb squad are invited to attend a joint planning exercise and brief led by A-TS staff. The aim of this presentation is to sell the requirement and benefits of a joint operation to decision makers and ensure that the program is set on a firm foundation. The course concludes with a series of joint exercises that will require the integration of both the bomb team and SWAT team to resolve the situation successfully.

Performance Objectives

  • Provide intimate bomb technician support to a SWAT operation.
  • Conduct basic hand entry operations.
  • Discuss and explain the theoretical knowledge required to execute a hand entry operation.      
  • Demonstrate the ability to analyze available information and select an appropriate RSP for a given IED situation.
  • Apply the skills taught in a safe and efficient manner.
  • Appraise available intelligence and develop an EOD support plan to present to the SWAT commander.
